If you like, watch, play, officiate, or care about sports in the Howard County community then you should attend the 5th Annual Celebration of Sports hosted by Howard County Recreation and Parks.

This annual event will feature JOHNNY HOLLIDAY, "Voice of the Maryland Terrapins", as the keynote speaker. Also induct honorees into the Community Sports Hall of Fame and host a delicious buffet dinner.

Howard County Recreation and Parks (HCRP) began the annual Celebration of Sports as a way to bring together organizations and businesses that have a vested interest in community sports in Howard County, Maryland. This celebration has grown from an afternoon picnic to an evening banquet.

HCRP is committed to the on-going growth of community sports at the youth and adult playing levels. Full time HCRP professionals oversee and facilitate leagues, tournaments, clinics, coaching education classes, focus groups and field development on a daily basis.

This annual celebration provides an opportunity to network with other organizations, businesses and professional Recreation and Parks Employees involved in Community Sports.

2006 COMMUNITY SPORTS
HALL OF FAME INDUCTEES:

Robert J. Baker- Bob has been an ardent supporter of Special Olympics since 1995. He has served Special Olympics of Howard County (SOHC) as a coach, program coordinator, assistant director and director. Through his leadership, SOHC now has more participants, offers more sports and has a stronger financial base than ever before.

Peter Finck- Peter and tennis are a life-long match. For 15 years he was director of two popular events for youth, the Columbia Junior Open and The Columbia Flier tournament. Peter was president of the Maryland Tennis Association, an officer in the Mid-Atlantic Tennis Association, served on US Tennis Association national committees and helped found the Howard County Tennis Association.

Russ Flowers- Russ began his officiating career with recreational programs sponsored by Columbia Association in the early 1970s. In the late 1970s he helped found the Howard County Officials Association and served as commissioner of officials in adult softball, basketball and football programs.

Carol and Philip "Woody" Hearn- For more than two decades, Carol and Woody worked tirelessly to provide athletic opportunities for girls in the Howard County Youth Program (HCYP). Carol and Woody served as coaches, officials and commissioners and worked to update uniforms and playing fields.

P.J. Kesmodel- P.J’s name is synonymous with lacrosse in Howard County, but he first became involved in local sports in 1968 as a coach for the Forest Hill swim team. In the 1970s, he founded a boy’s lacrosse summer league that eventually affiliated with Hero’s Inc. After the league added girls teams, P.J. spearheaded the effort to add girls lacrosse in high school.

Adelaine Stocks- In the early 1980s, Addie was the sole impetus, founder and administrator of the Western Howard County Soccer League, which now serves thousands of youngsters at the recreational level. Addie was involved in all aspects of building the fledgling league, from developing public relations materials, recruiting and training coaches and officials, writing its rules and bylaws, ordering equipment, and coaching.

Robert Vigorito- Rob’s passion for triathlons has earned him international acclaim and has solidified Howard County’s reputation for hosting one of the nation’s top events. When he became race director of the Columbia Triathlon in its third year (1986), it was mostly a small, regional event. Rob soon turned it into a Ómust doÔ race that fills to capacity (1,700 triathletes) every year.
